Keeping Singing Alive and Expressive
Soprano ANNIKA BÄCKSTRÖM, DMA (doctor of musical arts) in vocal performance, supporting area in ethnomusicology
"My vocal repertoire spans from art songs and folk songs to concerts and operas. I have sung leading roles in operas, such as La Traviata, The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute. I perform solo recitals in Sweden and the United States. I teach voice and hold performance seminars throughout the United States and Sweden. My main research is about the process of creativity in singing, and I have been invited to speak on this subject in the United States, Canada and Sweden.
I grew up in Sweden and began my music studies with both voice and viola. I have also studied French and linguistics in France and at the University of Gothenburg. I earned my bachelor's and master's degrees in theatre and vocal performance from the University of Illinois with the renowned John Wustman as vocal coach and mentor. I studied under late chief conductor Gunnar Staern at the Malmö Opera and with Court Singer MariAnne Häggander at the Stockholm Opera. I was awarded an individual artist grant from the Oregon Arts Commission, but now I'm happy to be back on the Redwood Coast, where I continue with my work, privately as well as at Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods.
